The world’s largest emission factor database just got bigger: 190K+ factors and counting for unmatched coverage

The world’s largest emission factor database just got bigger: 190K+ factors and counting for unmatched coverage

Reliable data is the foundation of effective climate action. We began building our emission factor database in 2021. Today, it stands as the most comprehensive dataset in the industry, providing the backbone for credible, auditable carbon intelligence globally. Trusted by over 25,000 users and embedded into hundreds of software platforms, our data powers emission calculations across scopes 1, 2, and 3 at scale.

We’re now accelerating through new data partnerships and an ambitious roadmap designed to deliver unmatched coverage and reliability.

In our latest data release, we’ve doubled the size of our database to over 190,000 high-quality emission factors. This marks a key milestone on our path to 10x coverage this year, but we’re just getting started. Let’s explore what’s behind the update and where we’re headed next.

Why emissions data accessibility matters

Getting reliable emissions data shouldn’t be the bottleneck in carbon accounting. Yet, for many professionals, the biggest challenge is sourcing reliable and up-to-date emission factors.

Much of the existing emission factor data is published in inconsistent formats and scattered across fragmented sources, making the process time-consuming, manual, and prone to error. We know this lack of accessibility slows down climate action and limits the quality of emissions reporting.

At Climatiq, we set out to change that. We’re making emission factors accessible through a single, harmonized, and trusted resource. Our data helps teams build carbon management capabilities faster, deliver reliable emission insights, and ultimately remove barriers to effective carbon management.

Accurate carbon data you can trust

Trust starts with data quality and transparency. All data in our database undergo rigorous validation and structured quality checks, with selective expert reviews by our in-house science and data team. Our Scientific Advisory Board ensures that our approach and processes are robust, relevant, and aligned with current industry standards and scientific best practices.

Multi-stage quality checks allow us to identify inconsistencies, outliers, and methodology gaps that might compromise calculation accuracy. Each factor is traceable to its source, with comprehensive metadata documenting calculation methodologies, potential quality concerns, and applicability conditions. Data is updated regularly, versioned, and publicly logged, so you stay remain informed and in control of updates.

This work is only possible thanks to our strong network of trusted partners. From ecoinvent and the International Energy Agency (IEA) to the UK Government, we collaborate with government agencies, academic institutions, and leading climate organizations to ensure all data is transparent, traceable, and credible.

Today, Climatiq is trusted by thousands of organizations worldwide, including in-house sustainability teams, climate consultancies, financial institutions, researchers, and product builders who need emissions data they can rely on.

More emission factors, improved coverage, and a focus on usability

With our latest release, Climatiq’s emission factor database has doubled in size, now offering over 190,000 scientifically-vetted and verified emission factors. It aggregates 80 datasets from 40+ sources, covering 300+ regions and 16+ economic sectors, making it the largest database of its kind.

But this isn’t just about volume of data. As with every database expansion, our focus is to solve persistent data gaps, increase coverage for underrepresented regions, business activities, and products, and ensure that you have access to the most recent emission factors that reflect the latest methodologies and real-world developments.

The latest data release adds 100,000+ new entries across core emissions categories like buildings, electricity, freight, food, and refrigerants. Head to our release notes for more details on the latest updates.

Beyond coverage, usability is at the core of our data offering. With every update, we ensure that new data is not only relevant for real-world use cases but also easy to work with. This ensures you can focus on generating and acting on meaningful carbon insights rather than sourcing and maintaining data without compromising accuracy or auditability.

And that usability principle extends beyond the data into how it’s accessed and embedded into everyday software tools and platforms for broader implementation of carbon-aware decision-making.

Access carbon intelligence when and where it matters

Unlike other solutions, Climatiq is purpose-built to be embedded directly into software tools and workflows. Whether you're conducting carbon assessments for your organization or developing carbon intelligence capabilities for your software, our data integrates seamlessly into your products and workflows. There are three ways to access our emission factor database:

  • Data Explorer: Used daily by thousands of professionals, our Data Explorer lets you browse our emission factor database for free. You can filter emission factors by sector, activity, region, and unit. It’s ideal for exploration and one-off lookups.
  • Spreadsheet add-ins: Access the database directly in your Excel or Google Sheets spreadsheets for precise carbon calculations without leaving your familiar workflow.
  • API access: Embed the emission factors directly into your tools and systems via our API. Our Data product already powers carbon management features across hundreds of enterprise software platforms.

At scale, finding the right emission factor for each business activity quickly becomes overwhelming. That’s why we are doubling down on Autopilot, our AI-powered mapping engine. Built with state-of-the-art natural language processing (NLP) models, Autopilot automatically processes unstructured scope 3 activity- and spend-based data to identify the most relevant emission factors. Autopilot takes the manual work out of factor selection, bringing consistency and scale to scope 3 reporting.

The future of carbon intelligence

Whether you're scaling product features, building internal tools, or reporting for clients, our data gives you the coverage, reliability, and transparency you need to deliver results faster, with fewer gaps and more confidence in every calculation.

And this is just the beginning. We're rapidly scaling to a database 10x its current size this year, supporting the most complex and granular carbon intelligence use cases.

Over the coming months, the Climatiq dataset will cover more regions, categories, and real-world use cases than ever. With new data from sources like EXIOBASE (v3.10), ecoinvent (v3.11), OEKOBAUDAT (2024), or BEIS (2025), we’ll bring deeper coverage across Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania. If there’s a dataset you need that isn’t yet included, let us know.
